Kybella Q & A

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable treatment that permanently eliminates fat. Although Kybella was originally developed to get rid of a double chin, it can also be used to get rid of problem areas in your face, jowls, knees, and other targeted spots. For example, Dr. Mest also uses Kybella to reduce bra fat.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a substance that’s normally found in your body, where its job is to break down dietary fats. When it’s injected into areas of unwanted fat, it does the same thing — it destroys fat cells.

After the fat cells break down, your body naturally clears away the waste. As a result, the treated fat is permanently eliminated.

What should I expect during and after Kybella treatment?

Dr. Mest determines the number of treatments you’ll need after evaluating the area of fat being eliminated. Some patients get the results they want with two to four treatments, while others may need six sessions.

Dr. Mest spaces each session at least one month apart to give your body time to clear away fat cells destroyed by the previous shot.

After Dr. Mest applies a topical anesthetic, he injects multiple shots placed close together in the targeted area of fat. The procedure typically takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Following treatment, most patients experience redness and swelling. You may also develop bruising, numbness, or areas of hardness.  These side effects usually go away within one to two weeks.

After your Kybella injections, you may have some redness, swelling, bruising, or an aching pain. Recovery time is different for each person, but these side effects usually go away within a week.

Although you can return to your usual activities right after your treatment, Dr. Mest may recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for a day.

When will I see results?

Fat cells gradually break down over a few weeks, so it takes time to see the results. Additionally, you’ll need to wait until all your treatments are finished before you’ll finally get a glimpse of your new face, chin, or body.
