What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s used for aesthetic and medical treatments. When Botox is injected, it temporarily blocks nerve signals. Dr. Mest also uses another type of botulinum toxin, Dysport®, which works using the same action.

Which facial wrinkles are treated by Botox?

Your facial wrinkles may all look the same, but there are two types. Static wrinkles are caused by normal age-related changes such as the loss of collagen, dehydration, and thinning skin.

The second type, called dynamic wrinkles, develop over years of using the same muscles to make facial expressions.

When Botox and Dysport are injected into muscles, they stop the nerve signals that cause contraction. As the muscles relax, the wrinkles they cause are significantly diminished or eliminated.

Botox treats dynamic wrinkles such as:

• Crow’s feet
• Frown lines
• Forehead furrows
• Neck bands

Dysport is specially formulated to target moderate to severe frown lines between your eyebrows.

Your face continues to show the full range of expressions because Dr. Mest carefully injects only a few key muscles, leaving the rest fully functioning.

What should I expect during and after Botox to treat wrinkles?

Your treatment takes about 15 minutes, depending on the number of wrinkles being treated. Afterward, the injection sites may be a little red, swollen, or bruised, but these side effects don’t last long and you can cover them up with makeup.

You’ll see the difference in two to four days, with results lasting up to four months with both Botox and Dysport. As either injectable begins to wear off, you can get another treatment to maintain your renewed appearance.

How does Botox treat underarm sweating?

Dr. Mest also uses Botox to treat hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating in your armpits. When used for this purpose, Botox blocks nerve signals in sweat glands, stopping them from sweating.

You’ll notice an improvement in two to four days, with the full effect occurring within two weeks. Your results may last anywhere from four months to 12 months.*
