How do dermal fillers diminish wrinkles?

As you get older, your face loses volume and gradually becomes dehydrated. It also produces less collagen and hyaluronic acid, substances that form the foundation of healthy skin by providing strength, moisture, and volume.

Dermal fillers contain natural ingredients that reverse these problems, temporarily diminishing wrinkles for six months to two years, depending on the product.* A few products produce longer-lasting results by stimulating collagen production.

What primary ingredient is found in dermal fillers?

Many of today’s dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid as their main ingredient. When they’re injected, these fillers replace your natural hyaluronic acid, so they increase volume, plump up the targeted area, and smooth away wrinkles.

Each hyaluronic acid product is formulated to target specific areas. For example, some are thicker than others so they add more volume. Additionally, some are injected close to the surface while others go deeper.

As a group, hyaluronic acid fillers are used to diminish:

• Nasolabial folds (wrinkles that run from your nose to the corners of your mouth)
• Marionette lines (wrinkles that run from the corners of your mouth down)

Although Restylane and Juvéderm are similar, the two products differ in the way they’re produced, which affects the amount of moisture that binds with the hyaluronic acid.

Bellafill®

Bellafill contains bovine collagen to produce immediate results and nonresorbable microspheres of surgical-grade plastic, which restore natural architecture and trigger collagen production. As collagen fills in around the microspheres, permanent results are produced. Bellafill treats wrinkles, restores cheek volume, and is used to correct acne scars.

Radiesse®

Radiesse consists of microparticles of natural calcium and phosphate (calcium hydroxylapatite) in a thick gel. The gel adds volume like other dermal fillers while the microparticles stimulate collagen production for long-lasting wrinkle correction.

Revanesse® Versa

This is a hyaluronic acid filler that contains perfectly spherical and uniform particles that balance smoothness and volume and break down slowly.

Belotero®

Belotero is a line of hyaluronic acid products formulated to integrate into your tissues to produce subtle results. It’s used for all the same problems as other hyaluronic acid products, but it also treats:

• Frown lines
• Periorbital lines (crow’s feet)
• Bridge of your nose
• Décolletage
• Vermillion border (rejuvenates lip borders)
